The Old Mill

In the Eure department, a mill to admire from the outside

This is a hanging mill. This monument is listed inthe General Inventory of Cultural Heritage(IGPC), with the site (old mill,Talus Island, old Vernonnet bridge, etc.) forming a listed site (1943).
In 1204, when Normandy became part of the French royal domain, Vernon lost its military role. Philip Augustus then granted one of his loyal followers the right to build a mill on the bridge. In the 18th century, six wheat mills were in operation. In October 1849, the completion of a dam built in Notre-Dame-de-l'Isle led to the sudden shutdown of the four remaining mills, and the millers were condemned to "unemployment."

The old mill is the last remaining example of the mills that once existed in Vernon. Now a simple half-timbered house, it was built around the 16th century, straddling two of the piers of the 12th-century medieval bridge which, crossing the Seine at the Île du Talus on which it stood, connected the commune of Vernonnet to that of Vernon (the former was attached to the latter in 1804).

Between 1925 and 1930, the Old Mill belonged to a revue composer, Jean Nouguès, who set up a dance hall on a barge moored nearby. This barge sank on February 6, 1927. In 1930, he sold it to an American, William Griffin. Following the owner's death in 1947, the city undertook its renovation due to the extensive damage caused during World War II military operations.
